Baseball's Back

It's springtime and baseball fans are winding up for another year of excitement as the MLB season gets started.

As spring training comes to an end, teams will be looking forward to the official opening of the season next week on Sunday, April 1. The first game of the year will be played in California with the Oakland Athletics hosting the San Francisco Giants. Also scheduled to play on opening day are reigning World Series Champions the St. Louis Cardinals against the New York Mets on the Cardinals' home ground in Missouri.

Curtains Up

Broadway will celebrate the official opening of another musical today when the curtains go up on Curtains.

The colourful musical that mixes comedy with romance and murder mystery opens today at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Starring as Lieutenant Frank Cioffi is David Hyde Pierce who recently appeared onstage in Spamalot. Debra Monk, a Chicago cast alumni, will play opposite Pierce as Carmen Bernstein. Curtains is directed by Scott Ellis who has also worked on Broadway this season directing Twelve Angry Men.

Spektor on Tour

Regina Spektor has announced dates to follow up her European tour with a jaunt across North America.

The Russian-born singer will begin her nine-date trek in Vancouver, British Columbia on April 21 and visit cities including Seattle, Chicago and San Francisco. Spektor's tour will also include a performance at the Coachella Music Festival on April 28 alongside musicians including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kings of Leon and The Decemberists. Spektor's latest album, Begin to Hope, was released in 2006.

The Madness Continues

March Madness continues this week with the top teams in NCAA Basketball competing for the championship.

Regional semifinals and finals are set to take place this week deciding which teams advance to the Final Four rounds next weekend. The Men's Final Four games are scheduled for March 31 for the semifinals and April 2 for the finals at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia. The Women's Final Four games will be played on April 1 for the semifinals and April 3 for the finals at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

Inherit the Wind

The revival of Inherit the Wind begins previews today on Broadway with a cast headed by Christopher Plummer.

The play, which first opened in 1955, will show at the Lyceum Theatre with the premiere set for April 12. The show is directed by Doug Hughes, of Doubt fame, and stars Plummer and Brian Dennehy whose recent work includes King Lear and Translations, respectively. Inherit the Wind is about the famous 'Monkey Trial' in 1925 when a teacher was tried and convicted for teaching Darwin's theory of evolution.
