Big Screen on Stage

Broadway's latest shows have taken a cue from Hollywood with more scripts being adapted from big-budget films.

Movie box office hits, including Mary Poppins and The Wedding Singer, have been successfully taken to the stage in live musical versions of the stories. It used to be that the film industry would look to Broadway for stories, as was the case with Chicago, but the number of film to stage crossovers is expanding with productions like Tarzan and The Color Purple making the leap from the silver screen to centre stage.

Las Vegas Loves Elton

As Elton John continues to sell out shows in his ongoing Las Vegas gig, he is also making time for small detours.

John is currently playing a slew of shows in the UK before returning to his show at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. He also has a scheduled break from the strip in September when he has concert dates set across North America, including stops in Vancouver and Seattle. Other performers who are resident in Las Vegas include Celine Dion and Toni Braxton, who has just announced her deal with the Flamingo.

Stanley Cup Showdown

It's a fight to the finish as the NHL Playoffs near the end and Lord Stanley's Cup is within reach.

The Carolina Hurricanes are one game from taking home the Stanley Cup after winning over the Edmonton Oilers in Monday night's game to make the series 3 - 1. It will be a battle on the ice tonight in Carolina as the Oilers try to hang on to their dreams of the championship after climbing through the playoffs from an eighth place ranking after the regular season.

Wolf Parade

Canada's latest indie rock group to hit the American market, Wolf Parade, has lined up a string of concert dates across the continent.

The tour will get under way in Ottawa and Toronto in early August and will include a performance in Texas at the Austin City Limits Music Festival in mid-September. The massive music festival will see Wolf Parade take the same stage as bands including Los Lonely Boys, The Flaming Lips and more.

Tony Awards

The 60th annual Tony Awards were presented last night in New York with some international surprises.

The big winner for the night was playwright Alan Bennett's British production of The History Boys. The English schoolroom drama took away six awards. Close behind was the Canadian-born comedy The Drowsy Chaperone with five awards. The American production about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Jersey Boys, walked away with four awards.
